Does the number of springs on a trampoline make a difference?

Monday, April 12th, 2010

One of the top selling features of a trampoline is the number of springs that the trampoline comes with, but the question is; do the number of springs make any difference? I put this question to the Etoys Zone in-house sales team, and the answer they gave was quite interesting. The team weren’t able to answer the question fully, they said that it depended on what the customer was looking for in the trampoline. The amount of springs on a trampoline does change the type of bounce that the trampoline produces, especially on round trampolines. However on rectangular and oval trampolines it depends on the structure and size of that specific trampoline as to how many springs should be on that trampoline.

Round Trampolines – When it comes to round trampolines, there is no question as to whether more springs make a difference, the clear answer is yes they do. The round shape creates an equalised bounce platform that means anywhere on the trampoline bed you get a clear bounce difference when more springs are added. We have tried and tested this system in-house with our own trampolines, where we have created defined trampoline ranges within the market. We started off with the more budget end range, which are our Fun Trampolines. These were built to compete with the more affordable trampolines sold by the likes of Argos and Homebase etc. They are designed with the bare minimum of springs too accommodate 16 stone adequately, meaning that for the average household, this is a perfect trampoline. If you are looking for something that can take a few more children and to let the kids try out the new tricks they learnt at school, then you start looking up the range, this is where it gets interesting.

We moved on to design the Skyhigh Trampoline Range a few years ago now, it has proved to be a huge success. This is where the principle of more springs came into affect. The Skyhigh trampoline range are produced with above the average number of springs, but not the highest number of springs. This means that they have a smooth controlled bounce, not to taut, but not soft by any means. You can do a full range of gymnastics activities on the 14ft Skyhigh trampoline as you need the space, but overall they can accommodate most needs. Why not go for the trampoline with the most springs though? Well, this is why it’s interesting, as a retailer of these trampolines not everyone wants a super duper high performance bounce machine, on the other hand they don’t want the village bin. The smooth mid range bounce offered by the skyhigh trampoline range is very popular, accommodating both children and adults it gives the family a cross platform bounce experience while being totally safe.

Now we move onto the Xtreme 360 Trampolines, designed about 2 years ago, we went all out on these trampolines and what we got was remarkable. The bounce on these trampolines is just mind boggling, we say that because round trampolines shouldn’t have the same performance as rectangular trampolines on a whole. However these trampolines are testament to the fact that you can produce a round trampoline that is in most cases much higher performance than a range of rectangular trampolines on the market. What’s the bounce like though? This is also an interesting factor as the bounce is slightly different to what was anticipated. The result from all those trampoline springs is something of a likeness to an exquisite exotic sports car. It delivers exactly what you ask it to, the amount of effort you put in you receive to perfection. This is rare in trampolines as they are rather primitive in their design, but it does seem that we have found the key to a magnificent trampoline. I can’t give all the credit to the springs though as a lot of it comes down to the sprung frame along with t bar fitting fixtures etc. But the overall result was very positive.

Rectangular Trampolines – Rectangular trampolines are totally different in every way in relation to round trampolines. They are designed and built solely for one purpose and that is for single user performance bouncing. The shape restricts these trampolines bounce area to the middle zone of the trampoline bed which means that they are generally 1 user trampolines. The bounce however is superb as you go up the trampoline range. The interesting thing here though is you don’t need the same number or more trampoline springs to achieve the same performance as a top end round trampoline. The rectangular shape changes the way you bounce and makes a much more definitive bounce area which in turn means you can have less equipment creating the same and better bounce than most round trampolines. The general guide here is not the springs and they are not a benchmark when it comes to rectangular trampolines. There are a large number of other factors that come into play when choosing the right rectangular trampoline for you.

Oval Trampolines - Oval trampolines are very young on the market and have seemed to have created quite a stir. In the short time that they have been available they have proved to be quite good trampolines overall. They are somewhere in the middle between a round trampoline and a rectangular trampoline. The number of springs used on the ovals is less as the shape principal of the rectangular trampoline still applies while at the same time the sheer brute force of the round trampoline over spec principal is used creating quite a well balanced trampoline unit. There are really only 2 brands of oval trampolines on the market so far and they have established themselves quite well in such a short time period, those are the Skyhigh Oval Trampolines and the Jumpking Ovalpod Trampolines. The bounce on the oval trampolines is a firm bounce that is stable across the whole surface of the trampoline bed. The major benefit in regards to bounce on these trampolines is the fact that 1 child can be bouncing in corner and another in the other corner and they wouldn’t know each other was there.

Overall there is no basic answer to this question and we hope that this guide has clarified some grey areas for you.

Ensuring that your children obtain regular sessions of exercise..

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

As any parental guidance book will frequently state, it’s fundamental that child or children undertake regular sessions of exercise to help them develop both mentally and physically.

Having said this, I understand that it’s not always easy, especially when your child possesses a games console, hatred towards competitive sport or an addiction to television. The local park is always an option, but with more and more kidnapping incidents making the news, it’s not always a viable alternative.

Having a trampoline in your garden is a reliable, long-term solution to your parental problems, enticing your children to undertake more physical activity and also giving you more time to relax. With a fitted safety enclosure, a trampoline can help to safely build confidence and get your child more involved in sport. Trampolining can also help you to develop in other sports, bouncing strengthens your leg muscles, helping to improve running skills and stamina.

How to break your trampoline…

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Although the title of this blog entry may suggest that we’re offering suggestions on how you can damage, or destroy your trampoline, in actual fact we’re advising you on the prevention of damage being done to your trampoline.

There are numerous ways of damaging trampolines, some common, some not so common, but this article will help you maintain your trampoline and also reduce the likelihood of injury to the user.

Some of the most common ways trampolines are damaged:

Exceeding the weight limit:
Exceeding the weight limit can be done in two ways; by having more than one person on the trampoline at one time, or having an older or heavier person bounce on a small trampoline intended for children. Both of these methods will damage your trampoline whether it’s straight away or some time afterwards, the trampoline will be damaged and in most cases cause some kind of injury. It’s easy to prevent this form of damage from happening, simply don’t allow more than one person to bounce on a trampoline that is unable to withstand the weight, and use a trampoline that is designed to take the weight, Simple!

Insufficient protection against bad weather and through the winter:
Protecting a trampoline against weather is both easy and cost effective. A trampoline cover is available for a fraction of the price of a trampoline and without it, you could easily find yourself having to buy a new one.

Wearing shoes whilst bouncing:
It’s a commonly known fact that you shouldn’t bounce on a trampoline with shoes on, and it is also frequently stated in most manuals, so why do people do it? Who knows, but they do! To avoid damage from this, simply don’t wear shoes when bouncing!

Incorrect assembly:
It is fundamental that when a trampoline is assembled it is carried out safely and correctly, as otherwise, the user could face serious injury. To prevent this from happening you can either do the obvious thing which is to read the instruction manual fully, or alternatively you can ask the retailer to assemble the trampoline for you, although this does usually comes with a charge.

Placing the trampoline on a steep hill:
It’s important that trampolines are assembled in a suitable location as it may affect the stability of the trampoline, and also put the user at risk of serious injury. To ensure that this doesn’t happen, simply place the trampoline on level ground, and make sure that this type of land is available before buying the trampoline.

The many benefits of the trampoline…

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

The trampoline may not share the same ‘appeal’ as some of the new, all absorbing games consoles currently on the market, but it offers users so much more than just graphics and online gaming.

Much like a dog, the trampoline isn’t just for Christmas, or any celebratory event in fact, it’s for life, and it can help you or your child to live your life to the full. Most sports contain an element of competitiveness, which some people find too much to bear, and instead of seeking alternatives, succumb to a life without physical activity and in some cases obesity.

This is where the trampoline comes in! A trampoline is both fun and a form of intense exercise that can significantly build muscles and burn fat. It’s also very fun and can be done as an individual activity, eliminating the competition characteristic.

Children and young adults who have adopted the trampoline as a method of losing weight or keeping fit have significantly benefitted from doing so, not only physically, but mentally. Sometimes for a self-conscious, unhappy person confidence is a hard thing to find, and a trampoline can help to build morale and fitness at the same time, leaving your child in much better shape all round as a result of this fun and beneficial piece of apparatus.

Trampoline Basketball

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

So Easter has come and passed and I haven’t had much time to make a post but while I was browsing the web over the weekend I came across a new craze called Trampoline Basketball. I personally love to play Basketball and I also like bouncing on my trampoline so why not bring the two together, The Craze uses the Height and Flexibility gained in Trampolining with the Skill of Basketball allowing for absolute freedom.

Recently we have started to use YouTube as a large resource for example videos and I think it is only right that I show you this video that I found,

The First Day Of Spring 2009

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Finally the rays of sunshine have graced us with their presence, Spring has officially begun. After a long winter we have some warm sunny rays to cheer us up, saying that though the snow was pretty awesome this year. I was quite interested in how they actually choose this day to be the actual Vernal Equinox. Here’s a basic explanation from wikipedia: In spring, the axis of the Earth is tilted toward the Sun and the length of daylight rapidly increases for the relevant hemisphere. The hemisphere begins to warm significantly causing new plant growth to “spring forth,” giving the season its name.

Now that we have a basic idea of what spring is and how they measure and come to this exact day, we can talk about how it affects you. Well it affects us humans in a big way, we can finally wake up, open the curtains in the morning and see some sunshine. Driving on the way to work this morning i took the time to notice just how many beautiful summer bulbs are out and flowering, advertising that the sun is finally here. Spring really is a great time, a time where we get excited about being in the garden and outdoors.

Now this is where we come in and talk about the outdoors and trampolines, as we are a trampoline company after all. Generally people are trying to make the most of this lovely weather we’ve been having the last few weeks and are thinking about the summer and what they need to make the most of their time. Well you need to get your trampoline out is the answer.

However the dreaded always happens every year, the children are pestering you on a sunny day to get their trampoline out and you realise that you have packed it right into the back of the garage. After labouring away to get the trampoline out, you then find that the rats have been at the trampoline pad surround and that you forgot to buy that new bed that it needed last year after that barbecue. Well never fear, that’s what we are here for.

We undertsand that with the current financial climate that you aren’t so keen on replacing the whole trampoline and would rather get the proper spares for the trampoline. The question is though where can i get the right trampoline equipment? Right here at Etoyszone, we stock all the spares that your trampoline parts that you would ever need.

Ideally you are probably are only looking to replace the trampoline bed and trampolines pads.Keep in mind though that you are going to have those barbeques again this year, and that same bird is goin gto come and crap on the trampoline again. So we suggest purchasing a trampoline cover with your trampoline pad or bed at the same time, ensuring that your trampoline will last as long as possible. Come have a browse through the relevant trampoline accessories that we have on offere now and see if you can grab yourself a spring bargian.

Happy trampolining.

Trampoline Market – How Has The Internet Affected It?

Friday, March 13th, 2009

The Internet, wow has it really been 36 years since we went online. The world has changed dramatically since then, we have become the google generation. We can explore under the ocean right from our very own desktops, hell i can order a donut from down the road and have it in hand within the hour. We have really taken the bull by the horns and adapted to the new micro chip world.

Online ordering is fantastic though, browse around for a few minutes, locate what you want at the price and done deal. Next day there’s a package waiting at your back door. How has this affected the outdoor toy market though and in particular the trampoline market. Below is an image that displays the market trend for trampolines, what’s interesting is how the shopping peek has been distributed over the rest of the year. Have a look:

trampolinetrend

The question is, has the Internet changed the way we shop. Or has the trampoline market just got smaller? What’s your thoughts? Has the fashion icon  finally lived out its shelf life or have people just turned to electronic entertainment as the new social thing. Or the other question is, do we just buy differently which means that the sales are slowly distributed across the year as people realise that their is no need to do the mad summer rush, but rather make the most of the rest of the year as well. Let us know your thoughts and what you think the year is going to bring, and whether you going to buy/upgrade your trampoline this year?

Happy Trampolining..

George Nissen – Modern Trampoline Inventor

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

I thought i would talk about something a little different today, we have already posted an article on the history of the trampoline and how it was invented with a walrus skin and all the rest. But there’s no real follow on and there is a huge time gap between the Inuit People and the actual first commercial trampoline being produced. Now we dulve into the modern day history of the trampoline and what role did the infamous George Nissen have in the trampoline history timeline.

George Nissen – Who is George Nissen?

  • Here’s an exact extract out of wikipedia of who he is:
  • George P. Nissen (born February 1, 1914 in Blairstown, Iowa) is an American gymnast and inventor who developed the modern trampoline and made trampolining a worldwide sport.Nissen became a keen gymnast in high school and won three NCAA gymnastics championships while a student at the University of Iowa. He had seen circus trapeze artists use their safety nets as an elastic bed to rebound and perform additional tricks. He thought that this would be a useful training tool for his tumbling. In 1934, Nissen and his coach, Larry Griswold, built the prototype trampoline from angle iron with a canvas bed and rubber springs. Nissen used it to help with his training and to entertain children at a summer camp.
  • An interesting fact here is that he is also the founder of the name “Trampoline” in the English world, as it is derived from the Spanish word “Trampolin”. He came up with this name after touring Mexico and Europe with his new gymnastic equipment performing for the public.
  • From there he went on to opening a plant in Brentwood Essex in 1956 where they produced trampolines that were sent all over the world.

Sadly in the early 1980′s industry took over and people started manufacturing their own trampolines, the big hit though was the word Trampoline was no longer a trade mark and seem to have a big effect on the Nissen franchise. They ceased trading in the early 80′s.

However George and his co founder Larry Griswold carried on the trampoline world and went on to create the USTA – United States Tumbling and Trampoline Association. From there Nissen held competitions all over the USA and Switzerland where the prestigious award “The Nissen Cup” can be won by trampolinists.

Year 2000 – Nissen dream of having trampolines included in the Olympics as a sport came true. From there the sport has grown from strength to strength and continues to do so.

Interesting Fact: George Nissen used the trampoline to train pilots in the second world war to orientate themselves with the feeling of being in the air.

That is the history of George Nissen in a nutshell. He was a great character in the trampoline world and has set the standard for us today. Trampolines have become a common commodity of today and have proved themselves to be a favoured toy amongst youngsters for generations now. It is always interesting to look back at what seems like such a basic contraption now, and yet was the birth of a new age in it’s time with it’s revolutionary design. Thank you George Nissen for creating the trampoline and helping it grow to be what it is today.
